Blazers Ice Hockey: background

The Maryland Student Hockey League (MSHL), established in 1988, is an association of over 50 school-based teams located in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

The Montgomery Hockey Conference (MHC) includes twelve teams: BCC, DC Stars, NWQO, Richard Montgomery, RAM, Sherwood, Upper Montgomery, Whitman, Walter Johnson, Churchill, Wootton and the Silver Spring Blazers.

Blazers Ice Hockey is a co-operative team playing under the Blazers banner and is composed of players from Montgomery Blair, Blake, Edison, Einstein, Kennedy, Northwood, Paint Branch, Springbrook, Wheaton and some small private schools.

The Silver Spring Blazers are usually able to roster both a Varsity and JV team. The JV team is focused on development, while our Varsity players play to win.

While Blazers Ice Hockey has traditionally been a co-operative team, we are constrained by a league rule that states:

The maximum number of students from one school is fifteen (15). Since the MSHL Co-op Review Board annually reviews all Co-op team proposals, if any Co-op team proposes more than fifteen (15) students from one school on a Co-op program application, the Co-op Board will review the justification for such and determine whether it is acceptable for the upcoming season.

It is important to be aware of this rule, because an excess of 15 Blair students would require Blair to leave the co-op and become a "pure" team with the players from the remaining schools operating as a separate co-op team. The limit does not differentiate between varsity and JV level plays, and as a co-op, we cannot cut players. 

The Blazers' Management Team's main goal is always to preserve the co-op. As such, it is important to indicate your interest early so that a plan can be made. Fill out the regular season interest form now!
